Culture

There had been many different aspects of cultures listed and described in this book.
The weather is usually hot and the indoor is about ten degrees cooler. Dragons are belived to see into the future. They are very powerful and wise. The family, even they are from the same origin, might have different color for the skin. Soldiers make a lot of money (compare to the business people) and the more stars you have the better your payments become.Usually people have big families (the narrator's family is big; father, mother, three boys, and four girls) The poorer the family, closer they live to the ground, or underground. Because the closer to the ground, there is more pollution and garbage, and harder for the people to live healthy. More wealthier, more stairs you have in the house, meaning that you have more space and more rooms for children and parents. There are books sold in languages of Chinese, Khmer, English, and French. Many dried fruits and vegetables sold at the market. The war had made more people miserable than they already were, and there never had been better solution than to end the war.

Dear Cambodia:

When there is one thing that changes the country to be destructive, that would be one foreign country that interferes. When there is one thing that benefits the country, that would be foreign influence. In your case... it is unfortunately the harm.
As I know people in the coutry is not advanced, as in education or technolgoy, but the foreign country forces had invaded the government's decision and had influenced all the other parts of the society which had led the conflict to the extreme violence like wise occuring in the country now. There are no solution, as far as I concern, as in how to resolve the conflict in a short period of time without expectin any loss. There would the sacrifices necessary, unfortunately, and it can be something that can be lasted for a longer time of period than anyone can ever expect. I feel I fortunate I am not experiencing any of these stuff that I have read, but I also feel pity for those who never know about the past and never is able to learn from these people. Telling my country's history, South Korea, which had separated itself from North Korea since the middle of 20th centry. I imagine how awful it is to lose someone so valuable and so precious in life. I am again so sorry to hear all the deaths that are occuring in Cambodia. I am hopeful, though, that throughout this book I can learn more and understand more about the war and its impact on the entire history of one coutnry and the impact of the society and its people.I have heard and indirectly experienced the conflicts and all the violence that you've experienced. I am very sorry to hear all of your loss and sickness. The country is on fire, with all the techno-weapons that are so different than decades ago.

When I have finished the book, overall I thought that how much effects there were for the country to go through the war. I personally first thought that I wanted to experience the war and the warfare, but now all the thinking that I had had been seized. In the previous posts I've claimed to experience the real war when I become a doctor. That thought had not been changed, but the mindset had been totally changed off. War is something that one should fear, avoid, and to hide off from. It shouldn't be something one shouldn't be waiting for... or thinking about having... just by learning from the texts I know how terrible it is. If my father died..., I wouldn't be able to live. It would be so hard on me to experience through that moment. The narrator is strong. very strong that she actually lives as if her father is just living off of the house for a long time. as if there is nothing that really kills her. The father, the mother, the sibilings... I feel I can't live without any one of them. I feel like I need them so much in my life that just by thinking that one of them died, that already depresses me... I hope, that someday that nobody cries or worries about the death of his/her family memebers... I wish in peace that I wouldn't see or hear much of the fighting and the killings... I know that if the day comes, even though one sees blood, nobody would be crying or screaming... I know that the day will come, and I understand that the day will come soon.

Khmer Rouge... this political party of Camobida killed about 1.5 million people or the third of the country's population under its regime. Its name come from the French, meaning Red Khmer. This Communist Party of Kampuchea, later the Party of Democratic Kampuchea, this violent organization gave so negative outcomes to the country that its motto was "To keep you is no benefit. To destroy you is no loss." This similar thing happened in China also when the same type of the beliefs were settled and spread through the country. Until 1979, lasting four years, when it was invaded by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and was replaced by moderate Communists, there were mass killing and harrassings. Its peace agreement, the leader Pol Pot, dissolved the organization, and was put on trial. There are so many effects of this evenets that it took several years to heal from this incident. Always, these communists were trying to take over the country with force even though there are so many victims within the country. The people are not experienced with this war forces... the men and women go through series of pain and sufferings. The chaotic situation continues... the reality doesn't end that fast. And once they realize it, their loved ones are gone, and what they have left is depression and fear..

Reflecting William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” with Graphic Novel

“Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare would become an effective literature if it were to be depicted into the graphic novel. By expressing the characters and the setting into pictures the reader would get better ideas for what is going on. It is hard for readers to understand this literature at first sight because there are so many characters and so much changing of the scenes. Since there are many changing of the scenes and time, the graphic novel would give much organized and precise descriptions. Since this type of literature, the play write, is originally for the visualization, graphic novels would convey much more information than just words. It would be difficult, though, to depict the emotions for the characters, but since the play write also doesn’t give away much of the emotions either, it would be actually better to present this literature with pictures. Expressing of the time would be much better also, through presenting the scenes in chronological ways, and doing techniques of narrating out the place and the times along with the pictures of the settings. This would give much easier time to recognize the plot and the characters, and it would also excite the readers more for there would be higher levels for hypocrisy and irony.

There were many wars in the past days; there had been so many dangerous, life-threatening conflicts that destroyed many people's lives. This not only includes the conflicts in the Cambodian and Vietnamese society, Khmer Rouge, but rather includes a lot of many other wars and destroying events as in the early sixteenth hundreds. I never thought about what can categorize these wars. Not by the number of deaths, the cost, or the length of the conflict. I wonder what other think; I just know that any kind of warfare would cause tremendous pain and cost of many people's lives. No matter how much or how long the conflict was there must've been some important, or significant reasons and effects behind them. There would not be anything that can explain it correctly or to precisely define them, but one should understand the cost of the wars and know how much many others can be affected by the events. The war takes all people's friends, family, and loved ones.
I believe in all the lives. I trust in their potentials but at the same time there can be negative or wrong pathways that can change one's path of life. No individual is able to make the correct decision for oneself except to accept the truth for oneself in one's present and carefully take one step at a time for his/her tomorrow. I think every moment of life is that way. Any wars start that way too. Either incident of happiness or sadness ends in the way they are created, even though they are not meanted that way. They don't know their potentials for becoming one that they become, but actually realizes after happening. There is a solution, but no prevention. Sometimes there can be a prevention, but not a solution. Either way your life makes your way. Either way it makes my life that way. I hope that I am making my correct choice for today and tomorrow, but I know that how that would effect my future in years, I would never know.

The Vietnamese Khmer Rouge destroyes the Loung family with violence force. Loung experiences so much of chaos along with many conflicts when they are forced out of their houses. Unfortunately, the family goes through so much series of hardships. Because of lack of safe sanitation system and clean sweage system there are many whom are suffering in the situation. As the violence continues, there are less food and less liberation in their fleeing and with her father lost, Loung goes through the process of maturity.
The family separates and the Loung family is separated. It takes time to reunite the family. Loung had to wait until the Khmer Rouge is out of country and finally there is peace in the country. There is no immediate peaceful freedom, though, the situation is relieved.
There are food shortages along with other problems that causes some unfortunates in the family. The government is officially not set yet and thet unstableness continues within the family.
There are still dangerous weapons everywhere where bullets are abandoned or used often as before, giving more threats to the survivors. Hoping for the better tomorrow and the future, Loung seeks for better dreams and thinks fortunately.

When the wind of revolutions strike the coutry, it is the country itself which takes all the disadvantages. There are not many advantages yet, and not for a while even after the war. The Cambodia experiences series of violence and attacks; and the narrator's family is not an exception. The father is killed, and she sees others killed also. The foreign forces are involved in this conflict, although nobody, as an individual, can defend anybody in the country. The technology is advanced and the average people who aren't in the conflict never have used those kinds of weapons. All who fight against or don't obey are killed or tortured.
There are hunger and chaos along with killing, some women raped and gets beaten in the middle of all the chaotic situation.
Culturally, there are many similarity between all the European conflicts and Cambodian conflict, addtionally, the foreign forces are involved in this movement. Whenever the other country gets involved in the other country's issues, there had been always greater conlfict that one should've had. It is interesting to compare the history of these continents.

"Darfur: No Redress for Rape." Human Right's News. 07 April 2008. Defending Human Rights Worldwide. 28 Apr 2008 .
The same website Human Rights Watch, but it is a different article of different even in the different country, this time in Darfur. The sexual violence on women includes sexual harassing and raping, and the victims are mostly from the age nearly young and ten. The judicial court is not advanced, nor rightful enough to protect one’s rights or even to punish the criminals with justice. The weak government and the judicial systems are the problems for further spreading of the crimes in Darfur. As the number of crime increases, there are increasing victims who are raped and sexually harassed. The solution must be provided immediately to prevent further worsening of the situation.
Feminist Majority Foundation, "The Taliban & Afghan Women: Background." Feminist Majority Foundation. 2007. Feminist Majority Foundation working for women's equality. 30 Apr 2008 .
This website, known as Feminist Majority Foundation, works for women’s equality, talks briefly about the history and the background of the Taliban and the Afghan women. Gender apartheid and Taliban laws regulate the women’s movements and any kind of suspicion and led them to be killed easily. For people without any knowledge of Taliban and the humanitarian crisis, the website provides sufficient information as in what it is and how it is created.
Imbornoni, Ann-Marie. "Women's Rights Movement in the U.S.." infoPlease. 07 April 2008. Defending Human Rights Worldwide. 28 Apr 2008 .
The infoplease website gives the wide range of information on anything of any places around the world. There is an author name mentioned but no further information is provided. The information on the US Women’s Rights Movements is provided with a chart that shows which year had what kind of women’s rights actions occurred. It allows comparing the current US situations with the US back till 1848, and shows contrasting issues with the current Middle East countries.
Kittleson, Mark. The Truth About Abuse. United States: Book Builders, INC, 2005.
Briefly talked, it shows the sexual harassment situation in the US and how the laws and protectors provide support for the women. It also provides other abusing like child abuse, and it shows that there are strong relationship of women and children. Often times, if the women are abused there is greater possibility that the children are also abused or they would become the abuser themselves when they grow up and have families of their own.
"Saudi Arabia: Male Guardianship Policies Harm Women ." Human Right's News. 21 Apr 2008. Defending Human Rights Worldwide. 28 Apr 2008 .
This article is one of the newest article in the Human Rights Watch website (described above) that shows how violent women is treated by the male guardianship policies in Saudi Arabia. Nearly many of the Middle East counties’ women suffer to live their lives through harsh laws that are basically set them in the worst condition, and that makes the males, even including their husbands and sons, are against them. Stupidly, the women in Saudi Arabia, as in Afghanistan, they must have the permits to go out and walk or travel, and if they do not, that counts as the illegal actions and any men has rights to harm her, hit her, or even kill her. Then the pro-male government fully supports the male to be set free from burdensome murder trial and nothing will really happen to him. Unfortunately, this is the current situation in many of the countries in the Middle East.
Shah, Anup. "Women's Rights." Global Issues. 15 Feb 2007. Global Issues. 28 Apr 2008 .
There is no information on the author, but the organization, or particularly the website, Global Issues, deals with many topics of the popular current events around the world. On the Women’s right’s page, there are brief, but many descriptive information for disadvantages and progress of women’s status in their community, such as lack of progress and gender discrimination in their work. It shows relationships of poverty, media, and militarism to women that strongly affect their lives.
Skaine, Rosemarie. The Women of Afghanistan Under the Taliban. North Carolina, US: McFarland & Company, INC, 2002.
The current situation in the Afghanistan under Taliban is what can be said the worst of the worst. The rules and regulation are set for not men, but for women. The women, when outside, they must have their son or husband or father, one male of the family, to ensure that she is allowed to be outside, and even outside there are also strict regulations as in how they have to behave, and what they have to wear, etc. If they are out of the circumstances, nobody can guarantee their safety, and all of these regulations unfortunately are set from the women in the early age until their death.
"Stop Violence Against Women." Amnesty International USA. Amnesty International USA. 28 Apr 2008 .
The Amnesty International USA is a famous organization known for fighting for amnesty of people who needs supports to have their rights and equality in certain situations. The foundations of Women’s Human Rights in International Law are talked, including many other organizations’ viewpoints and supporting acts in the past. They also provide the fact sheet that is briefly two pages of PDF that explains basic facts about the women and their rights. The strong message, Respect, Protect, Fulfill, is what they believe in as the state responsibility and they try to give the best supports and educations to people.
Varia, Nisha. "Women At Work." Human Rights Watch. 08 Mar 2008. Human Rights Watch. 28 Apr 2008 .
This article, actually published in As-Safir, the real Middle East newspaper website for the Human Rights Movement, is written by Nisha Varia, who lives in the actual country to write many newspapers to report the current situations of women. There are many disadvantages at work as being a woman. She goes through many descriptions within society what happens to women in general and specifies with her own experiences.
Volpe, Lane. Battered Women. Mississippi, US: Greenhaven Press, 2004.
This book contains the stories of the “survivors” women who went through their husbands and boyfriends physical and emotional abusing behaviors. They include such as hitting, calling them not by name but something that harasses their emotions, and threatening. Most women don’t argue in the first place but find themselves often in depression and sadness and anger but never find a solution what to do. Often times it is the others’ help to bring themselves out of their nightmare. This is also the ultimate solutions to the women in the Middle East. They definitely need other countries to help them out.
"Women and Civil Rights." Tunisia Online. 28 Apr 2008 .
This website is not official, but provides information of Tunisia and Tunisian women and the proper law that are enforced for the protection of women and the children. There are laws for regulating and looking after the husbands, males in general, to prevent them from harming any women. The laws and regulations are maintained well, and it is something to compare with the Middle East countries.
"Women's Rights." Human Rights Watch. Defending Human Rights Worldwide. 28 Apr 2008 .
The Human Rights Watch is the society that provides a lot of supports to people who lack other’s help to maintain their human rights. It is spread all through out the world, and the website is available to be translated into many different world languages. On the women’s rights, it provides the latest news and reports available, and there are opportunities and contributions given to the ones that are willing to donate or help out the organizations or the people.

Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

Thesis: While the US and many developed countries much of freedom and equality, there are many victims out in the Middle East who experience lack of justice and rights to protect themselves from violence. The biggest group to have the disadvantages is to be the women, and there are many things which not only harass them but actually threat their lives that we must recognize and provide solutions immediately.

I. Attention-getter: “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Abraham Lincoln’s famous speech at Gettysburg Address strongly emphasizes the importance of healthy relationships between the government and its people. Without guaranteed individual’s freedom and independence, there would be no stability or justice in the country. The human rights violence in Middle East, particularly Afghanistan, Sudan, and Darfur, has gone worsen under the influence of Taliban, and it is especially the women who suffer to go through all the challenges. Reason? Just because they are born to be women.
A. We, habitants of US, easily forget the importance of freedom and what is happening currently in many other countries. Many of us don’t even recognize the current situations in many other countries.
1. Most of the countries that experience difficulties maintaining stable governments are also having serious economic hardships as well; therefore, they never can stand on their own to provide the solutions to the problems.
2. The rest of the countries aren’t paying much attention and it leads to the lack of funding for supporting women and youngsters who are suffering while experiencing inequalities.
3. It is time to go back to Lincoln and his people’s minds. What are we missing and how can we prevent and offer solutions to the other countries which, unfortunately, experiencing many corrupted justice situations.
B. Many of them are not recognizing their rights. The law is corrupted and the people, particularly males, aren’t providing enough support to keep the women in proper positions in the society with portection.

II. The Afghanistan’s government has laws and social customs that aren’t strong and stable enough to ensure the people’s individual protection and rights
A. Law is not strongly meeting its job with the people’s needs. There are
B. Social Customs

III. History of Afghanistan (Fighting for Rights):
A. Compare with US History
1. . Almost the entire population of 6 million in Darfur is Muslim
2. “[...] because of decades of intermarriage, almost everyone has dark skin and African features. To a visitor, Darfurians appear indistinguishable” (Power).
B. It’s only more recently that the population has begun to divide along ethnic lines (Power).
1. This fighting has led to the oppression of one group, and subsequent “ethnic cleansing,” or genocide.
a. Janjaweed are similar to trained mercenaries.
a. Who they are
b. What they do
c. How they kill
2. More information about how many people are killed/refugee status.
3. Something about how the government has essentially ignored what was going on.
a. Info about majority leader.
b. Info about resistance leader.
4. Info about initial battles.
IV. What actually causes the human rights violence to go on?
A. Law
1. There are no laws such that protects the women from being harmed by males.
2. It is always the males who get the advantages and benefits when it comes to speak justice. The females often get threats or punishments even if they are innocent or victimized.
B. Social Custom
1. The long history of harassing women keeps the others, even women, to get away from the laws and customs, such as wearing clothes that cover their entire body and talking to men, and without breaking the corrupted rules the revolution for their protection the idea of preserving rights for women is not even possible to dream.
C. Lacking Supports
1. There are many organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, but the supports are lacking, therefore there is no one, no movement that will bring any changes into the society in the Middle East.
2. The situations get better, when the women and men are better educated with understanding of human rights and equality.
3. The government first has to be set up democratic, and the possibility that current situation would change is not that much. It is either the countries have conferences or have a war to prepare for all the needs.

V. Why the Rights have to be protected? (The importance)
A. To prevent further harms within the country and spreading of the bad customs to the other countries
B. Can we blame humans?
1. Maybe, but it doesn’t solve the problem.
C. Need to teach better land practices.
1. Info about sensible land use.
2. Info about water management use.

VI. Restrictions and mistreatments on women’s rights
A. No same life as men
B. life threatening
C. no social life or entertainments
D. no basic requirements needed (As human needs)

VII. The Effects of Abusive Laws and Behaviors
A. Children
B. Other countries
C. Family
D.

VIII. Conclusion – While it is important to for the world to get involved and stop the killing, it is even more important to try to focus on solutions having to do with climate change.
A. What are international groups required to do?
B. What can we do?
1. Info about how we need to get involved.
2. Cheadle – action steps.

Personally I have thought that people in Cambodia resembles Korea peoples (I saw the pictures of narrator and her family and the friends) The history follows similar pattenrs also as in Korean history before it split in to two countreis, Norht and South Korea. I wonder ifthe traditional customs fr foods would be similar too. About the war: as a Korean born in 1991, I have never experienced a war. It was my grand parents who experienced the war as young children. I have no physical or emotional experience and I feel inexperienced and at the same time feels safe nad happy to be in the richest and the nicest country in the world, US. Reading all this war and violence I feel pity for the children in war. I want to volutnerr mysel fas a doctor (ER) in the war in Iraq if the war siltll goes in untill I become a doctor. I want to experinence such poverty, sickness, and war sot hat I can actually "sympathize" with them. I want to be helpful. Someday, after all of my experineces I would like to write abook about it. (like the book that I'm reading now except that I am not a victim but a protector)

Cambodia's air pollution is very severe. As in China, it si normallly foggy of particles of dusts and many harmful gases are suspended in the sky and affects human's health negatively. The particulates trigger many respiratory inflamation responses, including bronchitis and asthma. There is one scene that narrator and her famil poasses the dirty children, probably orphans, and the cildren were playing in spellign palces that weref full of garbages. The hygiens of the country is very bad in general. While the narrator wakes up and waits for her mom who went to the market, (even though the narrator's family was wealthy- compared to others- they don't have a refrigerator so mom has to go out every dya to markets to buy the family's needs daily meat and the earlier she gets to the market, wshe would be able to get fresher foods. The country shows some symptoms of violence. THe newspaper and media, even though not advanced as much, report the murderous events by a group of pople and now the city grows in the fear of violence

Free Writing

I was very surprised how this time of the history in Vietnam was very similar to Korea few decades ago. I am pretty amazed at how their culture was similar to ours and their relations to the family and societies like business maket and attenting their everyday. I think that this book First They Killed My Father would talk first more about the background of the country for further description. This conditions, poor and devastating, is under no control and the mood and the air for the revolutionary get excited and arouse. Narrator's father, irionically at the sides of the defenses would be the first victim in her family in order to fit her to the title.
The father seemed to have more control over his family than mother did, in a way that this is not a maternal societal, but rather paternal. Societies in the old days varietly talks about rebuilding and revolting against the treaties and amenities that the new governments had build up and the struggles are still going on today.
The revolutions are terrible thing if there is violence involved in it. This country Cambodia is where the few wealthy people can handle refrigerators. Well I can't imagine the life without the refrigerator and also the life of misery to loose my father or mother in the revolution or war.
I think Mirabal sister's In th Time of the Butterflies are well written as well as this book which describes her experience in details in the essay.

Culture

Usually people have big families (the narrator's family is big; father, mother, three boys, and four girls)
The poorer the family, closer they live to the ground, or underground.
The weather is usually hot and the indoor is about ten degrees cooler.
Dragons are belived to see into the future. They are very powerful and wise.
The family, even they are from the same origin, might have different color for the skin.
Soldiers make a lot of money (compare to the business people) and the more stars you have the better your payments become.

Before reading: I was pretty excited about all the facts that this book deals about the genocide and it would be all actions and tears etc. But this book rather starts out with sweet, rather cheesy, style of writing that really bothered me. I don't know why, but the protagonist, the narrator is the little girl (maybe it starts as a little girl and soon grow up) who talks about her family and herself with a nice, but self-centered body image. I was pretty annoyed about the poor writing skill that shows no attraction for the readers to read more of it.
The descriptions are somewhat following the cultural guidelines, which is one of the reason that I partially want to finish the book, and I expect to learn more about Cambodia after I finish the book. I don't mind all the too-real-that-makes-one-grossed-out, but I can't stand a boring book. I hope that this book doesn't give me that kind of worrying. Plus, Since this book is little short for the requirement, I would want to try another short book, The House On the Mango Street, which is a short book written by Sandra Cisneros that is very famous to many people.

Cultural Commentary

The country setting is in Cambodia, late 1900s that few are wealthy and the rest of the people are suffering from the poverty, disease, and lack of order in the government. The young girl is the protagonist for the book, who has many sisters and brothers. It is not abnormal to have a lot of sibilings, for most of those are probably not able to survive through their adulthood. Father is called Pa and the mother is called Ma, while the rest of them are called by their name (I am not sure if there was any change in names when the book was translated to Englsh...) From the title, "They First Killed My Fater" it gives readers a clue that it would be something like genocide where innocent people die out from one man or one government's misleading, and the narrator's father is one of many victims. The narrator's family is rather living as a wealthy family, where there are many other children who is suffereing from hunger and homlessness.

Why I picked my book

I picked First they killed my father : a daughter of Cambodia remembers by Loung Ung because the title was very attractive to me. I know that Cambodia is one of the very suffering countries with corrupted governments and uneducated, violent people struggling for better lives without knowing what to do. Additionally, I wanted to know more about the country Cambodia. I believe that I can gain a lot of indirect experiences and learning of the cultures through the reading, and I hope that I can enjoy it as much as I gain knowledge. The cover is very interesting, too, with a picture of a girl who is dirty and looks lonely, maybe a orphan, but without any of her eyes showing. She must've been suffered and cried a lot, I thought, and I wondered if this was to be the real story. (Well... I'll figure it out as I go along with the book) This book comes from the list that Mrs. Burgess recommended and I think I can rely on the information for all the other books that went along had popular comments and recommendations when talked about in class.
In case that the book ended short, I want to try to read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. It is a rather short book, very unexpected, and I was charmed by the length, but I knew that it wasn't proper for the requirements that were to be met for the guidelines to pick the right book for the fourth quarter. I hope these books can give me ideas and liberations in my life that I can be soon changed and learned by them!

About the Riddle.

To the Author of the book. I was very surprised when I first faced the test. I never new that htere were other type of answer that were possible... and I never expected to hear from a boy character who is younger than me. I definitely think that he is a hero. There are two giants and two bridges. Just by asking what bridge would the other giant point to when they are asked that which one is the right bridge, you could easily which one is the right bridge without recognizing which one is the right troll. I love your book and I would like to read a lot of yours. ONe of the readers said tthat your writing flows... I really agree. Your writing sings like a bird, and it is very easy, but also very sweet to read.
I never read a book that is like this. Not fully Fantasy, or childhoold store. I don't even know where the story is going now. But it si definitely moving, touching, an dexciting story that one would never forget it as the best book of her life!!
About the character, I wwas very surprised. The child was half abused. Or tthoughted to be abused. He is clever but dumb... He knows that he is a bit young, or older than his age... and he knows that he loves to read and ridiculously, the books speak to him and he is able to understand them. How amazing. The fact that you described how book "Spole" was just crazy. I loved it! I have never read a fantasy that used this much of personification and similes and metaphors. This book is a poem, like the one that is full of those things.
I was very glad to read this book and I hope to meet another booko, (hopefully my next book) to be this good~!!

About the Book, The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

I loved this book. The author John Connolly's imagination and creativeness used throughout this book is amazing. The descriptions are so emotional and also very physical that it makes the readers to think that they are actually standing by the characters, covered with the invisible blanket. It is also quite amazing though, that the protagonist is a young boy, and he is the one who is to create all of his imagination.
I wonder if this was the author's childhood, for most of the authors usually depict their childhood, which they enjoyed and never could ever forget. This book, reminded me of my childhood as well, which I think was full of adventures and secrets, makes me want to go back to the old days. The apartments, but back of the apartments, playing with friends at the dark, and treaure hunts, hiding letters and things, exploring the forest and hills back of the houses... all these things excites me even now.
The age of innocence. When it breaks you feel like you have opened your eyes from the age of darkenss. I strongly felt that way, when I started to talk more deeply about learning and social relationships with the outside world. May be I longer had time for myself to reflect back upon the freedom and amazement I had or never thought of making exploration of something. Well, I still want to go back to my childhood, experiencing a lot of things.
This is a very personal relationship that I make with this book. Something I share witht he character and the author. I have never met a book that had deeply touched me in a way to make me feel sympathy. I am glad to read this book, as well as to analyze it, and I definitely recommend this book to other friends who had not yet read this book.

Theme
The world is full of secrets especially one has a greatful amount of imagination.
This I believe is true because all these figures are all David's creation. (well, actually the author's) and I am surprised at how deeper and longer this can be.

Free Thoughts on the freedom of Child's imagination

I was thinking, what made David to make these characters in his world with his strong imgination. Would that be his mom's death? his father's infatuity? war? or all of these factors accounted for one? Creativeness? There are many guessses as in why, and the truth, that David became extremely lonely and started to create characters that acted as his friends.
Last time I mentioned child's imagination and creativeness. As an adult, like David's father and his another wife Rose, things might turn out more simpler than David feels. Poor david, becomes lonely especiallyh that he figures that he was no longer a child for his mother's. His mother is gone, while his dad forgets her and remarries with a new lady who gives a birth to his step brother, Georgie. Rose isn't a bad spiritied woman, at all, though that David wanted tsme space between the future and himself in order to make himself more mature and readied for being an adult. This trnasitional part was missing when it was revealed that David felt hurt and depressed that his father never thought twice about Daivd. Everything made David upset and tearful, making him to sepnd more time with his books and talking to his imaginary friend.s We do't know how much, and how long this journey would mean to him, but it is true that this is the only exit available for David.

To growl viciously while baring the teeth.
To speak angrily or threateningly.

2. hind (p.77)
adjective
situated in the rear or at the back; posterior: the hind legs of an animal.

3 figurative language:

1. simile (p.68)
"....themselves looked to David like the faces of sleeping children."
using the simile he uses like to describe to help depict the palnts.

2. imagery (p.69-70)
"He was big and tall, with broad shoulders and hsort, dark hair."
this imagery goes on for lines to describe the characteristics for the crook man that David starts to see.

3. metapohor (p.70)
"...abaonded to the fire after roasted meat had been stripped from its bones."
it adds on to the description to the imagery that David sees when he first meets the man with the ax.

Quote
"it's all right, old fellow... It will heal soon enough" (p.71)]

Explanation
It sounds as if he's talking to David for the healing of his emotional parts.
This line maybe shows some symbolism or foreshadowing for what would happen in the future.

Theme
The child and the war. How the war and the disputations screw up one child's life but it also affects the imagination and creativeness of him, which might havebeen affected both positively and negatively.

Dear David's father...

I was very depressed when you shouted at your son, David. Did you even hear what Rose had said? had done? I'm curious. I would like to point out that you are a very bad dad. In that afternoon when Rose and David had their worst fight, clearly you weren't there. David and Rose had this quarrel, verbally, then at last Rose hit David. With a slap at his cheeck David bursted into tears and went to his room. Rose asked for his forgiveness and said sorry but it was too late. David's heart and tears wore off already and there was no one who actually could understand him... After you came, the situation have gotten worse. I believe that you should've been more clever about dealing with your child. You abandoned the books and toys from him for a day. You know that he can't stand without having those. They became his life after his mother was gone. I hope that you know that...
I'm not sure what Rose had said, but I 'm clearly sure that it wasn't all the truth that she's spoken. I think you are a helpless father for David. He thinks of you as a hero... a secret code working hero who works solving secret codes against Germans... (during WWII) but you just disrupted that just by shouting and taking away things that you shouldn't have had.
Think wisely and put yourself into David's position. Maybe you don't know what it is like to be David. Try to understand what is in him.

2 vacabulary words:

Tendril (p.62):
–noun Botany.
a threadlike, leafless organ of climbing plants, often growing in spiral form, which attaches itself to or twines round some other body, so as to support the plant.

Distend (p.66):
verb (used with object), verb (used without object)
1.to expand by stretching, as something hollow or elastic: Habitual overeating had distended his stomach.
2.to spread in all directions; expand; swell: The sea distended about them.

3 examples of figurative langues

Simile: "He had grown so used to it that he had almost ceased to notice it, like birdsong or the wind in the trees, but now it was growing louder and louder." (p.60)
David describes how the feeling has ceased like the bird singing in the forest...

Irony: "It called to him in his mother's voice. It said: David, I am not dead. Come to me, and save me." (p.61)
Her mother IS dead. Then whose voice is he hearing?

Personification: "...the ones that contained the strange, dark fairy stories he loved so much. He sensed that they were waiting for an event to occur, although he could not tell what it might be." (p.61)
Obviously the books cannot speak, or expect anything to be happened. It comes from David's imagination.

Quotation

"David," it said, "they're taking me away. Don't let them take me from you. Please! Follow me, and bring me home. Follow me through the garden." (p.63)

Explanation

David still hears the sound from somewhere. From the things that he should not hear: like books, etc. This time, his mom is speaking... only problem is that she is dead already few years ago. He still can't let her go... and without anyone who understands him, he gets even more lonely.

Theme

Childhood. David keeps suffering from the death of her mother. Without anyone who listens to him, he gets very frustrated and tired to deal with all the emotions inside him... he feels weak but knows how to defend himself from those who want to harm him. Rose is one of them, and he likes to offend her as much as possible. In fact, he is one unfortunate soul who seeks for a savior in his life... never finds one, but he creates one for himself.

The Book of Lost Things...
...by John Connolly

Dear Rose,

Congratulations, for having your first child, and I hope for your happiness in your marriage. It must have been hard for you to live with David, who still can't forget her mom, and tries to do things that would hurt your heart. I don't know what to say, especially I've never been a mom before (laugh). But then I would like to say, from the point of a child like David, that what adults think are wron most of the time, especially about children. As I grow up, I try to remember as many things as possible about me and my childhood, so that when I become an adult I would be able to think and understand other childrens' mind too.

David lost his mother and there is no one for him. His father, who calls himself a busy man, never really tries to listen to him, or understand what is going on in his son's mind. One of ways which he shows his indifference for David is the marriage, Rose. The marriage with you, and the appearance of a new brother, Georgie, are a lot for David, who just lost his mother and probably needs more time than that. That was something that all of us should keep in mind that we are too underestimating the emotional depth of children. That sometimes feel few times more than what we feel... probably hurt more too.

I've once hurt myself too, when I was younger than now, and I couldn't express my feelings to anyone because few of many people never understood me. Few of many. It doesn't take much people to set a standard in one child's mind. They are that young and inexperienced that when they experiece sadness, they'll never do such thing to make them sad again. David, whom I believe had been hurt by his father, and presence of you, Rose, is now closing his gate of mind.
When he cries, he will cry no more out loud. He will do it only in his world. There is nothing Rose, for you to fix this situation. Maybe listen to him more. I think when you talked about your Uncle, who dissapeared in a young age, was actaully good talk with David. David will open his mind hopefully, and you too, Rose, will be able to know children more through dealing with David.

Personification: And there, in the darkness, he had played with them, in his way. (p.45)

Quotation

"That night, David lay in his bed and watched the moonlight streamin gthrough the window. THe skies were clear, and teh moon was very bright. After a time, his eyes closed, and he dreamed of wolves and little girls and an old king in a ruined castle, fast asleep on his throne." (p.46)

Explanation

Still reminding that David's child-mind hasn't left him yet, telling that he is yet a person with a grand imagination with his hope and dreams still alive in his heart. This description, which I thought is so pretty, is singing and chanting the childhood.

Theme

Imagination. When does it come to you? If you closely think, it is when you are desperate, sad, and hopeless. Weird, but true. All of us tend to think and dream of something, whether it is a wish to explore our future or another world, to get a feeling of escape and freedom. It is true for David, too, who seeks liberation from book to imagine himself to be in a kingdom or a country where there would be no worries and sadness.

Dear David,

David. Please let your emotions out. When you keep your emotions inside it will start to be rotten and it will be molded eventually. I know your feelings. Feeling of anger and depressions from your mother's death, hatred and awkwardness from your dad having a new woman, Rose, and feeling of unreadiness and unstableness from having a newborn brother, actually half-brother born from Rose. These will kill you if you keep them inside and don't let them be expressed in some healthier ways. I know you had "attacks," and you have fainted after you have talked to your psychomatrit. You have also cried for what you weren't sure. Because you believe that no one can care for you for they wouldn't understand your feelins, you are keeping and hiding yourself from the others. I'm very sorry for what you've been through. I want to share more of myself with you. I think you are at one of the most important turning points in your life. I want you to pass them through easily without any hard or confusing moments with troubling emotions that might lead you to a unwished future.
I love fairy tales, too, like you David. But they are just stories, manmade, to make kids to be happy and joyful. It is the celebration for infinite creativeness of humans especially when they are at the childhood, and I had once time in my life that I loved to read them every single moment. As you get older, though, you leave them behind. You find more stuffs that are more related to the real world. I know that you don't want to face the reality, and I hope that you don't face them now. But then, you know, don't take it cowardly. Be a man, and face the truth. Your loving mother is gone, to the place that you can never ever reach before your death, and you are becoming an adult. Know how to control your emotions, and talk and trust people around you. They will open the doors for you, find the pathways, and lighten your ways until you learn to take a step for your long journey.

1. relegation (-relegate) (p.32): –verb (used with object), -gat·ed, -gat·ing.

a breach or wide fissure in a wall or other structure.
a marked interruption of continuity; gap: a chasm in time.
a sundering breach in relations, as a divergence of opinions, beliefs, etc., between persons or groups.

3 examples of figurative langues

1. irony: "In one story, a princess was forced to dance all night and sleep all day by the actions of a sorcerer, but instead of being rescued by the intervention of a prince or a clever servant, the princess died, only for her ghost to return and torment the sorcerer to such a degree that he threw himself into a chasm in the earth and was burned to death in its fires." (p.33)
-it is one ironic story that David introduces.

2. imagery: "The great sweeps of ivy that covered the house, front and back, had broken through the walls over the decades, so that tendrils crept from the upper corners of David's room, or bound themselves to the underside of the windowsill" (p.34)
-David describes Rose's house; it is never warm, and David never liked her and her house.

3. personification: "Dr. Moberley asked David, in the v-e-r-y s-l-o-w way that some of his books spoke, why the slates were so important." (p.19)
-David thinks that the books at Dr. Moberley's office are talking to him very slowly.

Quotation

"David didn't care much for church. He was still angry at God for what had ahppened to his mother, and for bringing Rose and Georgie into his life." (p. 29)

Explanation

David's anger and depression toward his mother's death was too serious to be taken lightly but it seems nobody actually recognizes his emotions. Without any of his feelings led out peacefully or healthfully, he starts to put himself at rage. He means hatred to hate everything; his father, Rose, the step-mother, and even himself.

Theme

If you hide your emotions, nobody recognizes, and you will eventually die out slowly. Without anyone noticing his seriousness of his emotions of rage and depression, David is starting to dying out. It is expressed that when one is deeply concentrated for one's worries, then the others might not be careful noticing his/her inside. It is impossible, however, when one is angry and that s/he is able to bring out his/her emotions.

Dear David,

Don't be depressed, or worried about your present. Eventually you will become an adult and know how to support your own emotions. For now, leave it to surroundings and to the air. I am very sorry about your mother's death, and I understand how hard that can be for you to handle.
Last year, my mother suffered for having a bad health because she had a stomach cancer. It was very close to the last stage, but fortunately she was able to feel it before it was too late. Whoa, it was close. And, after she went to Korea for surgery. She came back after about five months and my brother, sister, and I had to do all the works for ourselves when she was gone.
It was a tough work. The school was still going even while there was a shock in our family, and despite the fact that we had no mind to go to school it was defnite that mother wanted us to go to the school even though she was away. So following her words and wishes, we had to stay in US and go to schools waiting for her to comeback healthly. I was pretty much depressed for what I've seen, heard, and experienced. I was afraid to loose her, too. I think that was when I started to write the diaries. I bought a small journal book in a bookstore and started to write my emotions down on the papers. I got to know my feelings and emotions better and was able to controll my fear and anger as well.
So I recommend the same for you. I know that situation is different. I still have my mom, thankfully, and you... poor you... are not. Just don't loose yourself. Even though I have pretty much lost confidence and hope and self-esteem in my self as I was experiencing it, I have known and learned how others are important to their lovers as well. I don't know how you will figure you figure out, but I hope that we both are able to find light in our future.

Poseidon/ The Death Note Theme

Soundtrack to the Days of Their Lives
Poseidon/ The Death Note Theme (artist unknown)

Poseidon is the God of the sea who, in Odyssey, punishes Odysseus for ten years at the sea after the Trojan War which has also lasted ten years. He gets mad at Odysseus because he pokes the eye of the Cyclop, the son of Poseidon, and blinds him. Even though it was Cyclop who threatened the lives of Odysseus and his men, when Poseidon hears from his blinded son, he trembles in anger and revenges. This is one example that shows the characteristics of Greek gods; they have the figures that are no different than humans in both physical and emotional ways. It is interesting how Greeks have described their gods as no more than humans themselves with an exception of possessing a stronger natural power.

-.)

I picked the Death Note Theme from the Japanese animation Death Note. In this animation, the destiny of society and its future changes dramatically when a special notebook called Death Note falls from another world to the humans' hands. If the notebook keeper knows the name and the face of the another person, then he has potential to kill that person just by writing the victim's name on the notebook. Without any additional description of death, the victim dies in forty seconds by heart attack after his name is written on the page. When this almighty power is given to a person, he becomes the God of the world which is now his world. This situation, where one human has a stronger power than the another, reminds me of the Poseidon and Odysseus of the Greek mythology; Odysseus suffers at the sea without any hope to find his pathway to his homeland while Poseidon controls Odysseus' life over by keeping him at the sea for a decade.

The song hears as if it's the end of the world; more specifically, end of Odysseus' world. It gradually builds up the mood of rage and uncertainty at the sea, while it illustrates the increasing power of Poseidon possessing over the life of Odysseus. As the repeated melody brings up its volume and creates an illustration for waves and thunderstorm, which Odysseus likely experiences, it gets very exciting. The darkness and the excitement melds and further develops the setting for the deep-blue-sea.

Top 10 of Crisis by Robin Cook

1. This book is on third person’s perspective view that oversees and reveals the overall situations but tells only limited information which intensifies the readers by creating a mysterious mood. Overall, the figurative languages such as simile, metaphor, and sarcasm, are widely used, and for each dialogue, there are strong characters showing which I liked.

2. Generally, I wouldn’t recommend this book to others only because it is too long to be a fun book. It was pretty boring since all it dealt about most of the time was whether they should have an autopsy on the dead body or not; and also the issue of how, after agreeing upon to have it.

3. Long book (about 550 pages); but while the characters were nicely developed. Each characters shows strong personality and virtue which leads to many conflicts and incidents all over. This whole story is about a doctor who gets into the medical malpractice suit. The question is, “why did the patient died of the heart attack? If not, who killed her?”

4. One example of characters, Craig Bowman, a self-centered, darkened-spirit man who had mourning and lousy childhood, is a doctor who is very professional at his field whom everyone seems to envy his success. Although he gets into the medical malpractice incident for his patient Stanhope’s death, his selfishness nevertheless dies out of his mind. He is a father of three daughters but has divorced with their mom Alexis. She helps him out very much during the malpractice trials proceedings and seems as if she stills loves him.

5. Additional other character; of another example, Jack Stapleton, who is Alexis’s older brother living in NY, who is a pathologist who carries out autopsy. Likely Craig, he also has a bad memory in his past that his wife and two daughters died in a plane crash. He had to go through a lot of depression until he meets a new woman named Laurie. One day a call from his dearest sister Alexis brings him to Boston, Massachusetts, where he helps out his brother-in-law to exonerate him from being accused of murder. With his brilliance he figures the “murderer” out at the last minute of the trial as he presents obvious, clear evidences found in patient’s body and the medicine vial that was responsible for her death.

6. There is a twist at the end which surprised me a little bit; it wasn’t that much not expected, so I was neither lost nor confused. It was kind of disappointing though, thinking that for the last two chapters that barely includes ten pages I had to waste my time reading through the previous 23 chapters that were about 500 pages long. Spoiler: Craig was actual murderer.

7. When it was revealed that Craig was a murderer, he suddenly disappears from the court, which left everyone to think that he was the one who killed the patient Stanhope, and it was the truth! Where did he go? Nobody knew where he was; except there had been papers all over to find the criminal Craig.

8. About the Epilogue that is of three pages; when Jack went on a honeymoon to Cuba with Laurie he meets a guy who exactly looks like Craig. He wondered if he could actually be Craig and reached him and asked his name while introducing himself, and after knowing his name was Ralph Landrum he checked on the name with Alexis on the phone. Alexis said, “He was Craig’s patient who died before one year ago,” woo~ then who would be that guy whose name is Ralph Landrum but still alive?

9. I think that the meaning of this book is “don’t be corrupted.” Craig first of all, was a corruptor of his family, then his profession, and then to himself. He disrupted then tended to destroy what it had been peaceful. It would cause others to bleed but the most importantly; you would be the one with all the scars and scabs.

10. Summarizing, the actual murderer was Craig, who pretended that he wasn’t even charged with the medical malpractice. He was the one who hated Patient Stanhope so much because she had bothered him very much as a problem patient (PP) but then inpatient, selfish doctor Craig wasn’t fitted to her enough to control his own emotions of anger around her.

Dear Jack:

The story is hurrying up to its end! I can't wait until I figure out who actually "robbed" Craig's house. I feel so sorry for the girls, and for their parents, too. And nevertheless, I am very concerned about you and Laurie. You guys shouldn't be separated any longer like this despite the fact that you aren't able to move to anywhere. Woo... that's bad considering that your wedding is less than three days from now. I wish that everybody sets okay at the end so that Craig can do his job as he did before, professsionally and that he could rejoin his family after figuring out how big love and supports his family had given him during his harshest time of his life while his girl friend was testifying against him at the trial.
Additionally, I hope for the best that Randolph is doing well until the end so that he is able to win victory over that villain lawyer Tony and his fella.
And please be more careful. For the past week you’ve tried hard to gain the permission for the exhumation for that you had to sacrifice your dearest body. Well, I know that you had hit some of the hits back to the friends you gave you a knots, but still you don’t want to stand in front of a bride with a bluish face that worries everyone at the wedding, do you?
For the ones that might read this book I won’t reveal the ending; that is why I tried to write from the pov that I do know nothing. I suppose that other readers would have much fun and excitement as I did, and definitely this book by Robin Cook was one of the most recommendable books.

And Bye,

Tina Jung

Quote

"This was the second part of the message. No autopsy, No police." (p. 348)

Explanation: It was the message that the two criminals left to the daughters of Alexis and Craig. They didn't want the autopsy to be happening and they also didn't like the fact that this incident could actually get them in trouble, so they left another message, no police.

How it relates to the Theme
It shows how corrupted the society is, and therefore how dangerous and unfair and unjust it is, too. The message cannot be delivered to the police nor it could be safe to just be quiet. What choice would Craig and his fellows make?
